The 19th running of Petit Le Mans was held at Road Atlanta in Braselton, Georgia, during the last week of September. This was the last race of the 2016 season for the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship and the end of an era for the Daytona Prototypes. The next few blogs will be recounting my experiences covering this endurance sports car race for the first time. The 64th annual running of the 12 Hours of Sebring was held on Saturday March 19th at Sebring International Raceway. Over the course of this classic endurance race we experienced sun, rain, light, and dark. We also witnessed how the overall winning team won there second consecutive race in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship taking the so-called 36 Hours of Florida. This blog is about my experience at the “12 hours of Sebring” (actually about 15 hours) from the spectator side of the fence. First up is morning warm-up and the paddock. Hope you like the photos.
Friday was my second day at Sebring International Raceway. For the morning sessions, headed over to the outside of the front straight near the entry to Turn 1. For the rest of the day explored the inside of Turns 16 through 14, then cut over to the outside of Turns 2 to 4 in the afternoon. Was a good day to explore the circuit with all the track action ranging from Porsche GT3 Cup and Continental Tire Challenge races to the WeatherTech Championship practice and qualifying sessions. IMSA returned to Lime Rock Park for the Northeast Grand Prix. The beautiful natural terrain track is about 1.5 miles in length and is situated in the Berkshire mountains in Lakeville, Connecticut. The GS and ST classes of the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge (CTSCC) competed in the Saturday morning race. Scott Maxwell and Billy Johnson won the GS class in the #15 Ford Ford Shelby GT350R-C. Round 13 of the Pirelli World Challenge (PWC) GT/GTA/GT Cup class was held Sunday afternoon (June 28). JD Davison in the #33 Always Evolving Racing Nissan GT-R-GT3 won the race. GTA class was won by Frank Montecalvo in the #66 DragonSpeed Mercedes-Benz AMG SLS GT3 and GT-Cup was won by Colin Thompson in the #11 Kelly-Moss Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 Cup. On Saturday morning (June 27) the Pirelli World Challenge (PWC) and North America Sportscar held “Caffeine & Octane” at the RealTime Team paddock. This was a great way to meet the drivers while having a cup of coffee. Later that morning, the GT/GTA/GT-Cup classes held their warm-up session for the afternoon race. Round 12 was won by Chris Dyson in the #16 Bentley Team Dyson Racing Bentley Continental GT3. GTA class was won by Frank Montecalvo in the #66 DragonSpeed Mercedes-Benz AMG SLS GT3 and GT-Cup was won by Colin Thompson in the #11 Kelly-Moss Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 Cup. GT Class Race #2 for the Pirelli World Challenge (PWC) at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park was held Sunday mid-afternoon. Johnny O’Connell in the #3 Cadillac Racing Cadillac ATS-VR GT3 won the race. This was a “clean sweep” of the weekend races for Johnny O’Connell. Butch Leitzinger and Chris Dyson in the #20 and #16 Bentley Team Dyson Racing Bentley Continental GT3s were second and third, respectively. Hope you like the photos.
