The pre-race festivities on the front straight are always an exciting place to be with the teams getting the cars onto the grid, the crowd of excited fans, and everything else that goes on before the race start. Hope you like the photos.
Warm-up was held at mid-day under sunny blue skies with the cars taking a few laps around the circuit for last minute checks. It was also a good opportunity to get some shots of the drivers and teams as they headed back to the paddock after the warm-up session. Hope you like the photos.
The opening round of the Verizon Indy Car series was held on the streets of St. Petersburg in Florida. The picturesque 14 turn street circuit is about 2 miles in length and encompasses the beautiful harbor front, the Al Lang Stadium, Dali Museum, and part of the Albert Whitted Airport. Will Power in the #1 Team Penske Chevrolet was at the top of the combined practice sessions with a time of 01:01.3621 and top speed of 105.603 mph after 74 laps. Hope you like the photos.
Will Power started on pole position and led for about a third of the race, but took a spin on lap 40, which cost him several positions. Two laps from the end of the 85 lap race, Scott Dixon in the #9 Target Chip Ganassi passed Mike Conway and went on to win, with Ryan Hunter-Reay finishing second, and Simon Pagenaud third. Hope you like the photos.
The Saturday qualifying session for the Grand Prix of Sonoma was taken by Will Power with a fastest lap of 1 minute and 17.4 seconds. Josef Newgarden was second fastest and Scott Dixon third. Was an exciting qualifying session. Hope you like the photos.

At the Detroit Belle Isle GP, IndyCar held races on the Saturday and Sunday afternoons, as well as practice and qualifying sessions. This was a very busy and exciting weekend for IndyCar. Here’s a selection of shots from the race weekend. Hope you like the photos.
For the last part of the IndyCar race, photographed Turn 17 from the inside of the track near the “Spider”, then went to the podium area for shots of the winner and place-getters. Was a great few days at the GP of Alabama, and must thank the pro photographers, track safety marshals, staff, and fans who helped me. Here’s some shots of the winners and other placeholders. Hope you like the photos.
After photographing the start of the race near the Turn 4 to 5 hill and early race action along the Turn 11 to 12 straight, walked along the straight to Turn 12 for some 3/4 front shots of the IndyCars as they sped through the slight Turn 12 corner. After shooting there, walked back to the Turn 4 to 5 area for shots of the cars coming over the hill and down into Turns 5 and 6. Hope you like the photos. The start of the IndyCar race on Sunday afternoon was delayed due to heavy rain and thunderstorms. The weather was so severe that organizers advised everyone to find shelter in permanent structures. However, the storms cleared after a couple of hours and the 100-minute timed race started with 23 cars on a wet track. After 69 laps, Ryan Hunter-Reay won the race driving the #28 DHL Andretti Autosport, with Marco Andretti in the #25 Snapple Andretti Autosport runner up, and Scott Dixon in the #9 Target Chip Ganassi Racing placing third. Hope you like the photos.
For the afternoon qualifying session went to the Turn 1 to 2 complex to shoot the cars as they speed down the front straight, into Turn 1, then up through the hill straight into Turn 2. This is a great spot to see IndyCars navigate elevation changes at the track. During the end of the qualifying session, walked over to the pit area to get photos of Will Power, who took pole position with a time of 01:08.3120 at an average speed of 121 mph, driving the #12 Team Penske. Hope you like the photos. Continue reading “2014 Indy Car Qualifying at GP of Alabama (Apr 26)”

The GP of Alabama was held at the picturesque Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama (http://barbermotorsports.com/higpa-home.php). This was the first time I’d been to this track, and with the help of other photographers and staff, found some great vantage points to photograph the cars on this beautiful road course. What I really liked about this track were the elevation changes and differences in backgrounds for framing the cars in photographs.
