2014 Sebring to Lime Rock Park – Part One of My Motorsport Photography Year

At this time of year its natural to look back at what you have done, reflect on lessons learnt, be thankful for what you have, and look forward to next year. In some ways 2014 was the first year of my motorsports photography “apprenticeship”. I learnt a lot this year in terms of refining technique, seeing “light and shadows”, composition, and planning. But most importantly, it was experiencing what happens behind the scenes at race car events and meeting the people who make these events happen. Was lucky to have experienced different race series from sprint and endurance sportscar racing to open wheel racing. Special thanks to my wife who let me go away on my race car photography weekends, GTSport Racing, Motorsport.com, North American Sportscar, other photographers, race organizers and staff who helped me this year. Here’s part one of my motorsports photography year. Hope you like the photos. Continue reading “2014 Sebring to Lime Rock Park – Part One of My Motorsport Photography Year”

2014 Part 3 – Indy Car Race at GP of Alabama (Apr 27)

For the last part of the IndyCar race, photographed Turn 17 from the inside of the track near the “Spider”, then went to the podium area for shots of the winner and place-getters. Was a great few days at the GP of Alabama, and must thank the pro photographers, track safety marshals, staff, and fans who helped me. Here’s some shots of the winners and other placeholders. Hope you like the photos.

2014 Part 2 – Indy Car Race at GP of Alabama (Apr 27)

After photographing the start of the race near the Turn 4 to 5 hill and early race action along the Turn 11 to 12 straight, walked along the straight to Turn 12 for some 3/4 front shots of the IndyCars as they sped through the slight Turn 12  corner. After shooting there, walked back to the Turn 4 to 5 area for shots of the cars coming over the hill and down into Turns 5 and 6. Hope you like the photos. 2014 Part 1 – Indy Car Race at the GP of Alabama (Apr 27)

The start of the IndyCar race on Sunday afternoon was delayed due to heavy rain and thunderstorms. The weather was so severe that organizers advised everyone to find shelter in permanent structures. However, the storms cleared after a couple of hours and the 100-minute timed race started with 23 cars on a wet track. After 69 laps, Ryan Hunter-Reay won the race driving the #28 DHL Andretti Autosport, with Marco Andretti in the #25 Snapple Andretti Autosport runner up, and Scott Dixon in the #9 Target Chip Ganassi Racing placing third. Hope you like the photos.

2014 Indy Car Qualifying at GP of Alabama (Apr 26)

For the afternoon qualifying session went to the Turn 1 to 2 complex to shoot the cars as they speed down the front straight, into Turn 1, then up through the hill straight into Turn 2. This is a great spot to see IndyCars navigate elevation changes at the track. During the end of the qualifying session, walked over to the pit area to get photos of Will Power, who took pole position with a time of 01:08.3120 at an average speed of 121 mph, driving the #12 Team Penske. Hope you like the photos. 2014 IndyCar Friday Morning Practice at GP of Alabama (Apr 25)

The GP of Alabama was held at the picturesque Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama (http://barbermotorsports.com/higpa-home.php). This was the first time I’d been to this track, and with the help of other photographers and staff, found some great vantage points to photograph the cars on this beautiful road course. What I really liked about this track were the elevation changes and differences in backgrounds for framing the cars in photographs.
