2023 Historic Festival 41 at Lime Rock Park (Part 3) (September 2)

Saturday was race day for the Historic Festival 41 at Lime Rock Park, with 18 on-track sessions scheduled. Hope you like the photos.

Arrived at the track early, and on my way down to the A Paddock, walked past the Lime Park Chalet area, where guests had a great view of the front straight, with different seating options and refreshments served. At this time of the morning the sun was gently illuminating the track with beautiful yellow and magenta light.

On my through the Midway saw a 1963 BMW 700 Sport for sale.

Continued through the A Paddock and past a 1926 Bullnose MG Super Sport.

Arrived at the inside of Big Bend for race 1 of the Jim Haynes Memorial / Formula Juniors. A 1959 Osca Tipo J.

For the 9.25 am VS2 Sports 2000 race, went to the outside of Big Bend. Race start, under beautiful morning light.

Into Big Bend with a 1986 Lola 8690 (top), 2003 Carbir CS2 and 1990 Lola T90/90 (middle) and 1989 Lola T89/90 (bottom).

Changed focal lengths for a wider shot, to capture the cars going under the pedestrian bridge.

After several laps, walked to my left for side panning shots of the cars. Really liked the side profiles of these cars.  A 1985 Shrike P15 (top) and a 1990 Lola T90/90 (bottom).

Exiting Big Bend with a 1980 Tiga SC80.

Next up was the War Era: Pre-War and Early Post-War race at 9.50 am, which made an amazing sight as these cars sped down the front straight at the start off the race.

Really enjoyed watching these cars speed into Big Bend, since you can really see how the drivers “fight” with the steering wheel as they go around this corner. A 1933 Plymouth Speedster (top), 1935 Old Gray Mare (middle) and a 1953 TD (bottom).

Through Big Bend with a 1929 Stutz Special.

At 10.15 am, the Tin Tops / IMSA RS / Under 2.5 Litre Car race started. Entering the Esses with a 1988 BMW M3.

A 1968 Porsche 912 speeding by.

Another shot of the 1988 BMW M3, this time, exiting the Lefthander.

For the start of the 10.40 am MG Feature Group race, walked back to the Lefthander so could get shots of the race start with the cars all bunched up as they entered this corner. This time, tried a panning shot.

Stayed for a few laps to get front on shots of the cars.

Turned to my right for panning shots of a 1960 MG A moving “through the grass”.

Walked along the straight between the Lefthander and Righthander for a different vantage point to capture the Mid-Century GT / Sportscars Under 2 Liter race at 11.50 am. Racing, with a 1958 Turner 950S and 1960 Turner.

A 1972 Chevron B21 in Canon livery, which was a favorite of mine, since I use photography gear from this manufacturer.

A 1969 Chevron B16.

The 1993 Reynard 93H/Toyota in red livery reminded me of a Ferrari Formula One car.

Another red livery car, a 1978 Ralt RT1.

I think the red colored cars caught my eye, so here’s a couple of cars in blue livery.

At the end of this session was the lunch break, so headed back to the A Paddock to grab something to eat and drink to recharge my energy for the second race sessions; and along the way walked through the Midway (top), past the Infield spectator area (middle), then down the hill to the A Paddock (bottom).

During the lunch break there were a lot of things going on; including visiting the car corrals, watching cars do hot laps and listening to the sounds of Lime Rock.

After lunch, walked up the hill, past the B Paddock, to the outside of West Bend.

Arrived at West Bend in time for the second VS2 Sports 2000 race at 2.40 pm. From this location, you can get great shots of the cars coming down The Back Straight (top), around West Bend (middle), then into the Down Hill under the “Lime Rock Park” bridge (bottom).

For the start of the Tin Tops / IMSA RS / Under 2.5 Liter Cars second race at 3.30 pm, wanted to get a shot of the whole field going down the Sam Posey Straight, so walked over to the top of the Downhill in the spectator area for a vantage point to take this shot.

At this time of day, the low light coming though the trees was casting some beautiful shadows for the cars to speed through. A 1957 Alfa Romeo Giuletta Spider (top) and a 1959 Porsche 356A (bottom).

A couple of wide angle shots from the outside of West Bend. A 1960 Austin Healey Sprite Mk I (top) and a 1957 Tojeiro Climax (bottom).

This is a great location to pan and track the cars as the go past you. A 1958 Turner 950S.

A 1959 Porsche 356A.

At 4.20 pm the second race for the GT / Sportscars Over 2 Litre / Sports Racing Car class started. To add variety to the shots I’d taken, tried some panning shots of the cars as the sped down The Back Straight. A 1963 Aston Martin DB4.

It wasn’t long until the Big Bore Cars / IMSA GTU Porsches second race started at 4.45 pm. A 1979 Porsche 911 Euro SC in Martini Racing colors.

A couple of shots of a beautiful 1973 Datsun 240Z.

A couple of more panning shots.

Was great how at the end of the session, the drivers would wave at the safety Marshalls, to thank them. A 1972 Porsche 911 ST.

The last session started at 5.10 pm, with the second race of the Wings and Slicks / Formula Fords.

An Alfa Romeo (right) in hot pursuit of a 1972 Chevron B21 (left).

A 1972 Chevron B21 (top) and a 1969 Crossle 16F (bottom).

“Into the Downhill” was one of my favorite shots of the weekend, with the late afternoon light illuminating the back of the open-wheeler.

I think the words on the side of the Lime Rock Park caravan “Tradition, Beauty, Speed; described the great event, that is the Historic Festival. What a great couple of days on and off the track. Many thanks to everyone who helped me, and thanks for spending your time reading this blog.
