2023 MiataCon (October 28)

At the end of October, the inaugural MiataCon was held at Lime Rock Park, to celebrate the iconic Mazda MX-5 Miata. The event included grassroots racing, an on track HPDE, autocross lapping sessions and car corrals for Miata’s of different era’s. This blog is about Saturday at MiataCon. Hope you like the photos.

Arrived at the track early morning, and was greeted by some beautiful low and soft light, illuminating a pair of Miata’s, with fall colors in the background. Was thinking how it was great to be able to attend an event at Lime Rock Park during the fall, so could experience this track against beautiful autumn colors.

The owner of this Miata had a great location to park the car and pitch a tent for camping.

Continued down the hill to the A Paddock, which was bathed in the early morning light.

Was great to see a Mazda dealer at this event, displaying the latest version of the Miata MX-5, and the new CX-90 SUV.

Continued through the A Paddock, past the Tower and a variety of Miata’s, ready to race.

After arriving at the end of the A Paddock, went to the outside of Big Bend for the first on track session. Here’s a photo of the beautiful view from this part of the track, with the A Paddock and fall tree covered Berkshire Mountains in the background.

It wasn’t long until the Miata’s hit the track for the first race. Here’s a series of photos of the cars coming down Sam Posey Straight, around and out of Big Bend. The session was amazing, with beautiful layers of light and shadows, backdropped with the fall colors from the tree’s behind.

Was looking around for other vantage points where could get shots of the cars with the fall colors behind them. So went to the inside of Sam Posey Straight for panning shots of the cars coming down the straight.

After getting the front straight shots, walked over to the inside of Big Bend and noticed bushes and trees lining the inside and outside of the track, and how this would be a great “autumn frame” for the cars speeding along the track. So tried some low shutter speed shots, and managed to capture a couple.

Continued around the inside of Big Bend, until reached the entry to this corner, and tried some more slow shutter speed shots. This time, of the cars moving along the straight between the Lefthander and Righthander, with the Inner Field spectator hill in the background.

Walked along the inside of the Esses, then turned around for panning shots of the cars with the fall lined tree’s creating a colorful background.

By now it was time for lunch, so headed back to the A Paddock for something to eat and drink. Along the way met a beautiful dog.

Had a quick lunch, then went over to the B Paddock for a group photo of the many Miata’s that attended this event.

Was great that the owners had a opportunity to take their Miata’s around the track.

Saw some cool looking modified Miata’s.

Went back to the inside of the Esses and walked to the end of the Righthander, then to the outside of this corner.

Here’s a few shots of the cars entering and leaving the Righthander.

After this session ended, headed up to the FCP Euro Proving Grounds at the top of the hill past the Infield Spectator area. Was fun watching the cars doing hot laps around the proving grounds.

By now it was around 4.00 pm, so headed back to the car, since needed to drive back home to Boston, which was about a three hour drive. Many thanks to everyone who helped me. Had a great time capturing MiataCon, especially with the fall colored backgrounds. Thanks for spending your time reading this blog, and the other blogs from this year. Wish everyone Happy Holidays and New Year.
