2023 Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen (June 25)

The forth and final blog of this series is about race day for the WeatherTech Championship series at Watkins Glen International, the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen. Hope you like the photos.

For the start of this six hours endurance race, went to the top of the grandstand at the end of Turn 1 to cover the start, since another member of the team would cover this turn from ground level. The race teams and spectators in the grandstands standing for the USA National Anthem.

One by one the cars left pit lane (top) for the warm-up lap behind the safety car (bottom).

At 10.40 am, the race started; with the GTP, LMP2 and LMP3 cars getting the green flag first.

Which was followed by the GTD Pro and GTD classes.

After the start, walked down from the grandstand I was in (top) to trackside, with the plan to capture the cars along Turns 1 to 2 first, then make my way to other parts of the track. The #27 Heart of Racing Team Aston Martin Vantage GT3 (middle) and AO Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R (992) (bottom).

Also tried some very slow shutter speed shots. The blue livery of the #10 Konica Minolta Acura ARX-06 Acura ARX-06 matched the iconic blue guard railing of Watkins Glen International.

Out of Turn 1 with the #93 Racers Edge Motorsports with WTR Acura NSX GT3 (top) and the #88 Af Corse ORECA LMP2 07 (bottom).

The #3 Corvette Racing Corvette C8.R GTD (top) and #01 Cadillac Racing Cadillac V- Series.R (bottom).

A line of Grand Touring Prototypes being led by the #7 Porsche Penske Motorsport Porsche 963 out of Turn 2.

The #27 Heart of Racing Team Aston Martin Vantage GT3 climbing out of Turn 2 into 3.

Started my way back up the hill and stopped to get some shots of the cars hitting the painted curbing down the Turn 1 to 2 straight. The #35 TDS Racing ORECA LMP2 07 (top) and #61 Af Corse Ferrari 296 GT3 (bottom). Really like the design of the Ferrari 296 GT3.

Kept walking back up the hill until I reached Turn 1, for front shots of the cars coming down the front straight. Three wide down the front straight (top) and the #32 Team Korthoff Motorsports Mercedes AMG GT3 turing into Turn 1 then exiting this corner (middle and bottom).

Continued walking along the front straight for some side panning shots of the cars as they sped by. The #31 Whelen Engineering Cadillac Racing Cadillac V- Series.R (top) and slow shutter speed pan of the #25 BMW M Team RLL BMW M Hybrid V8 (bottom).

Headed over to the outside of the the Esses at Turns 3 to 4, which is another great location to get photos of the cars framed by the blue guard rails. A BMW M Team RLL BMW M Hybrid V8 speeding into the Esses. By now it was the middle of the day, so headed to the media center to get some lunch and download the mornings photos.

After lunch went to the inside of Turn 9 at the top of The Boot. Even though the mid-day light was very harsh, like how it reflected off the windshield of the cars. The #17 AWA Duqueine D08 (top) and the #04 Crowdstrike Racing by APR ORECA LMP2 07 (bottom).

The #47 CETILAR RACING Ferrari 296 GT3 coming over the top of The Boot.

Was interesting how some cars collected a lot of dirt and grime, as illustrated by the eventual outright winner of the race, the #6 Porsche Penske Motorsport Porsche 963 (top), whilst other cars, like the #01 Cadillac Racing Cadillac V- Series.R looked relatively clean (bottom).

Turned around, to take photos of the cars as they speed into Turn 9. For these shots, after taking editorial style photos, like to try really slow shutter speed shots of the cars for artsy photos. The #77 Wright Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R (992) (top) and the #70 Inception Racing McLaren 720S GT3 EVO (bottom).

Sometimes, am lucky, and capture the blur of red lights from a car behind the car you are focussed on, as seen here with the #70 Inception Racing McLaren 720S GT3 EVO.

Then walked to the Chute part of The Boot for shots of the cars going around Turn 6. The #9 Pfaff Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R (992) (top) and #88 Af Corse ORECA LMP2 07 (bottom). Was getting closer to the end of the race, so headed over to the media center to drop of my long lens, before going to the podium for post-race celebrations.

The VP Racing flag flying from the cockpit of the winner of the 6 hours of the Glen, the #6 Porsche Penske Motorsport Porsche 963.

All the trophies lined before presentation to the race winners.

Winners podium and champagne celebrations, congratulations to all the winners of this 6 hour endurance race. After the celebrations, headed to the media center to download photos, edit and upload. After getting all the photos uploaded, was great to have dinner with the photography team. Had a great few days at Watkins Glen International covering all the IMSA events under sunny, cloudy and rain-filled skies; which added to the variety of photos I was able to take. Thanks again for all the people who helped me, and thanks for spending your time reading this blog.
