2023 Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen (June 23)

The next blog in this series covers the practice, qualifying and race sessions that happened on Friday at Watkins Glen International (WGI) during this IMSA event. Hope you like the photos.

For the 8:35 am qualifying session of the Porsche Carrera Cup, went to the outside of Turn 9 at the top of The Boot. Started this session with front shots of the cars as they went up the hill, then changed perspective, and panned the cars as they sped into and around Turn 9. The #17 McElrea Racing (top and bottom), # 57 Wright Motorsports (middle) and #82 ACI Motorsports (bottom) Porsche 992’s.
Next up was the Lamborghini Super Trofeo qualifying session at 9.20 am. The #1 Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti Autosport (top) and #14 Flying Lizard Motorsports (bottom). Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo Evo2’s.
It wasn’t long until the Michelin Pilot Challenge cars were on the track for their second practice session at 10.10 am. The #88 Archangel Motorsports Aston Martin Vantage GT4 (top) and #71 Rebel Rock Racing Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R (bottom).
The #91 van der Steur Racing Hyundai Elantra N TCR.
Really liked how the USA flag was on the end plates of the rear spoiler of the German made Audi RS3 LMS SEQ, with the USA and German flags flying in the background.
Down the Turn 9 to 10 straight with the #79 NV Autosport Ford Mustang GT4.
As the session continued, walked over to the other side of The Boot called the Chute. Liked how the blue livery of the #79 NV Autosport Ford Mustang GT4 matched the blue color of the billboard and safety fencing.
The #39 CarBahn with Peregrine Racing Porsche 718 GT4 RS CS exiting Turn 6. After the session finished 11.10 am, went back to the media center to download photos, eat an early lunch and edit photos.
For Race 1 of the Porsche Carrera Cup, needed to capture the start from the top of the Turn 1 grandstand, so headed over there early to secure a spot. By now, the skies were getting very dark, making the weather look ominous, and was a sign of things that would come later in the day.
Was cool to see all the cars lined in pit lane before heading off to the track.
At about 1.25 pm, the green flag was waved, and the race began.
After a photographing the cars racing along the front straight, headed down the grandstand to the grassed area behind the catch fencing, but didn’t stop at Turn 1, since another photographer in the team had already covered this area.
So walked down the hill along the Turn 1 to 2 straight until I reached the first opening in the catch fencing for photographers. Really like this location, since you can get side 3/4 panning shots of the cars from a low perspective, with multiple lines of the blue fencing in the background.
Continued walking down the hill to another vantage point for shots of the cars exiting Turn 1 with a grandstand in the background. The #20 MDK Motorsports Porsche 992.
After reaching Turn 2, captured more shots of the cars speeding down this straight. The #72 Goldcrest Motorsports (top) and # 21 Goldcrest Motorsports and #10 MDK Motorsports Porsche 992’s (bottom).
Turned around to get shots of the cars going up the Esses at Turns 3 to 4.
For the Lamborghini Super Trofeo race, also needed to capture the start from the top of Grandstand 1, so walked back up the hill in time for the 2.25 pm start. With a unit price of about $300,000, there is about $8M worth of Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo Evo2’s in this shot. That’s a lot of race cars.
Heading off for the warm up lap.
The race is on.
Following a similar routine to the last race, got some shots of the cars racing down the front straight, then headed down the grandstand for ground level shots of the cars.
Really liked the different shades of blue in this photo. The #55 Forty7 Motorsports Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo Evo2.
For this shot tried something different, by pushing the 500mm lens upon against the catch fencing, so could get shots of the cars lined up with the curbing along the Turn 1 to 2 straight. The #46 Precision Performance Motorsports Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo Evo2.
Since all the sessions were back to back, did’t have time to go to a different track location, but this time started photographing the 3:35 pm qualifying for the Michelin Pilot Challenge at the end of the front straight at Turn 1 at ground level. The #15 Rockwell Autosport Development Audi RS3 LMS SEQ and its sister car.
Instead of going down the Turn 1 to 2 hill, stayed around Turn 1, and walked along the front straight to a photographers hole in the catch fencing for panning shots. The #71 Rebel Rock Racing Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R.
The session I was looking forward to started at 4.30 pm, with practice 1 for the WeatherTech Championship. This would be the first time I would see the new Grand Touring Prototypes (GTPs) on the track in person. In pit lane, and getting ready to hit the track.
Let’s go. The #6 Porsche Penske Motorsport Porsche 963 leading prototypes and GT cars along pit lane.
On the front straight with the #70 Inception Racing McLaren 720S GT3 EVO.
Some shots of #6 Porsche Penske Motorsport Porsche 963 along the front straight and exiting Turn 1.
One of my favorite car liveries, the “dinosaur”, on the #80 AO Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R (992), and if you look carefully, you can see drops of rain starting to fall.
By the time I reached Turn 2 at the bottom of the hill; the rain got heavier, the skies got darker and the cars headlights got brighter. The #10 Konica Minolta Acura ARX-06 (top), #31 Whelen Engineering Cadillac Racing Cadillac V- Series.R (middle) and #18 Era Motorsport ORECA LMP2 07 (bottom). Love shooting in the rain!
Probably my favorite shot of the day is the one above of a BMW M Team RLL BMW M Hybrid V8 leading an LMP2 down the Turn 1 to 2 straight in the pouring rain, with rooster tail behind, and headlights lighting the path forward.
By the time I walked back up the hill to the photographers hole in the catch fence, the rain stopped and the light got brighter. The #61 Af Corse Ferrari 296 GT3 (top), #9 Pfaff Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R (992) (middle) and #01 Cadillac Racing Cadillac V- Series.R (bottom). After the session finished, headed back to the media center to dry off, get some food, download and edit photos. Thanks for spending your time reading this blog.
