2024 Sahlens Six Hours of the Glen (June 23)

Day four at Watkins Glen International, was race day for the WeatherTech Championship, with the Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen. Looking forward to capturing this classic endurance sportscast race event. Hope you like the photos.

For the start of the race went to the Seneca Grandstand at the end of the front straight. When I arrived at the Grandstand, walked up the stairs at the side of the stand, and found a seat, on the very right side, about several rows from the top. From this location, had a great view over the catch fencing, of the front straight and the straight between Turns 1 and 2. Conveniently located next to the Seneca stand are official merchandise and refreshment vendors, and restrooms.
Even though I was at the Seneca Grandstand, could still capture the pre-race fan walk using the 500mm lens. Was great to see a lot of fans taking the opportunity to get up close to the race cars lined up along pit lane. Also, if you look closely, at the lower left of the photo, you can see Spike the dinosaur from AO Racing.
For the pre-race festivities, was great to see the teams lined up in front of there race cars.
It wasn’t long until the cars moved out, one by one, along pit lane, to the race track. First, the GTP cars.
Then the LMP2’s, and GT cars.
At 11:10 am the Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen started, first with the GTP cars roaring down the front straight, with the #40 Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti Acura ARX-06 leading the field into Turn 1.
Next came the LMP2’s. Inside line with the #99 AO Racing ORECA LMP2 07.
Then the GTD classes. The #62 Risi Competizione Ferrari 296 GT3 leading an Aston Martin, Corvette and other cars into Turn 1.
After the field passed, the #25 BMW M Team RLL BMW M Hybrid V8 left pit lane.
Stayed for a couple of laps to get photos of the cars coming down the front straight. The #01 Cadillac Racing Cadillac V- Series.R.
After packing up my gear, walked over to the Ninety Stand for photos of the cars going down the Turn 1 to 2 straight. The #12 Vasser Sullivan Lexus RC F GT3.
Also tried some slow shutter speeds to try to capture the speed of these cars going down the Turn 1 to 2 straight. The #77 AO Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R. (992)
Also tried panning photos of the cars moving up through The Esses. The #25 BMW M Team RLL BMW M Hybrid V8 (top) and #22 United Autosports USA ORECA LMP2 07 (bottom).
Left the Ninety Stand and went down the hill to get photos of the cars speeding up The Esses; between Turns 2, 3 to 4. From this part of the track you really get the sense of the speed and maneuverability of these race cars. The #120 Wright Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R (992) in pursuit of the #3 Corvette Racing by Pratt Miller Corvette Z06 GT3.R (top) and an ORECA LMP2 07 (bottom).
Next turned my attention to panning photos of the car at the top of The Esses. The #80 Lone Star Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3.
Continued on my journey around the outside of the track, and went to the outside of the Inner Loop. What’s great about endurance races, is that you have a lot of time to visit many parts of the track. The #7 Porsche Penske Motorsport Porsche 963.
A couple of photos of the #10 Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti Acura ARX-06.
When I tracked the cars, would follow them as they moved along the straight into the Inner Loop and through this part of the track. Here’s an example with the #14 Vasser Sullivan Lexus RC F GT3.
The #13 AWA Corvette Z06 GT3.R.
Went back to the car, then drove to the inside of the Inner Loop. First took photos of the cars as they entered this complex. The #63 Lamborghini Iron Lynx Lamborghini SC63 with its signature LED brake lights (top) and the #64 Ford Multimatic Motorsports Ford Mustang GT3 (bottom).
Then panned the cars as they went through the Inner Loop. The #5 Proton Competition Mustang Sampling Porsche 963 (top) and #04 CROWDSTRIKE RACING BY APR ORECA LMP2 07 (bottom).
Then tried some “artsy” panning photos, where I timed the cross-over of the cars in the foreground (which gives the pattern of color) and the cars I had the focus point on for panning in the background. The #9 Pfaff Motorsports McLaren 720S GT3 EVO (top), #5 Proton Competition Mustang Sampling Porsche 963 (middle) and #64 Ford Multimatic Motorsports Ford Mustang GT3 (bottom).
Turned around, and walked to a location where could get 3/4 front panning photos of the cars speeding down the Back Straight into the Inner Loop, framed by the blue guard railing. The #65 Ford Multimatic Motorsports Ford Mustang GT3.
Looked up, and could see the sky was getting very dark, so checked the weather report on my iPhone. Rain was expected soon, so went back to the car and put a rain cover on my camera and lens, and put on a rain jacket. Drove over to the outside of The Boot and walked though the pedestrian tunnel under the Turn 8 to 9 straight to get to the inside of The Boot. It wasn’t long until the rain poured down. Here’s a series of photos of the #04 CROWDSTRIKE RACING BY APR ORECA LMP2 07 to give you an idea of how much rain was coming down. A few laps later, the race was red flagged, so found some trees for cover.
With about an hour to go, until the end of the six hour race, the sky cleared, the sun came out and trucks were on the track to remove the standing water..
For the re-start of the race, walked over to the inside of the Chute part of The Boot. During the first couple of warm-up laps, you could see the water spray behind the cars, but this subsided after the cars did a few laps. The #34 Conquest Racing Ferrari 296 GT3 (top), #5 Proton Competition Mustang Sampling Porsche 963 (middle) and the the #7 Porsche Penske Motorsport Porsche 963 (bottom) who would go on to win the GTP class and take the outright win. After the race finished at 5.10 pm, walked back to the car. Had a great time today with all the different photography locations, weather conditions, and of course the on track sports car racing action. Thanks for spending your time reading this photo blog.

  1. Great story David. You make it look like the most beautiful course in the world…well…maybe it is.
